Winged Shadows

Time is told on this west facing wall as the shadow cast by the projecting rectangle (gnomon) crosses the common hour bars in the afternoon light of this schoolyard. The upper parallelogram marks the sun’s path on the day of the winter solstice; the lower parallelogram marks the path of the sun on the day of the summer solstice, and the middle rectangle defines the path of the sun at the spring and fall equinoxes. Thus, this sundial graphically maps the hours of the days as well as the seasons of the year. Painted Aluminum, H 20 feet.
