Stone Memorial Sundial, Sparkill, NY

This granite sundial was commissioned by the Shimel-Hyams family as a gravestone for the family’s burial plot.

The beveled design of the top resulted because the true south alignment of the sundial was at an angle to the line of the adjacent gravestones.

Etched on the top surface of this simple horizontal sundial is an equation of time chart to correct for the seasonal variation of the earth’s orbit.

Lines marking the path of the sun on the birth days of the deceased and his spouse are engraved into the dial surface. Black Granite
